If you're interested in where your food comes from, the future of food and the food industry check out this link for Food Inc. the movie. It will be shown on PBS this month. The movie was released this past summer in select theatres.

This is such an excellent, eye opening movie for anyone who eats food! It was also nominated for an Oscar for best Feature Documentary. One of the movements this movie supports, and something I've been a huge advocate for since college is the Local movement. Without getting too political, I think that in times like these it is important for us to start doing what we can to help support our own communities. Purchasing local food from local farms not only helps our local economy (and has impacts that WE actually see), but also improves our health. As I said, I'm such a huge advocate for the local movement so for anyone else who is interested I've included several links below for resources on how to get involved.

>Slow Food Atlanta slowfoodatlanta.org
Our local chapter of the natinal Slow Food movement. Slow Food was created in 1989 in opposition to fast food and fast lifestyles. They support local farms and are working to create more links between schools, businesses etc. to those farms to provide people with better food.

>Farm to School Georgia www.farmtoschool.org/state-home.php?id=58
In partnership with Georgia Organics, this program "promotes comprehensive Farm to School programming that incorporates food, farm and nutrition education into the 4 C's: Classroom, Community & Farms, Culinary experiences & Cafeteria."

>The 3/50 Project www.350project.net
Movement which encourages people to pick 3 LOCAL, independently owned business and spend $50 a month at those businesses. They say that for everyon $100 spent at a local store, $68 comes back to the community. If that $100 is spent at a national chain, only $43 comes back to the local community and none supports your community if the $100 is spent online.

I also write often about this topic on my blog, A Life Without Diets. The link is listed below. If anyone has any questions or wants to know more about getting involved in this movement please fee free to email me! adepriest2@gmail.com

I just watched this movie a couple of nights ago and I am so glad I did! It really is an eye opener. A little disturbing at times but not so much so that the educational value of it didn't far outweigh that. It is so easy to go through life with blinders on and the "ignorance is bliss" mentality. But this movie makes you realize that the individual consumer really does have the power to make a change just by deciding what we purchase and don't purchase. Unfortunately for now it is a lot more expensive to eat healthy than to not, but hopefully that can change too!
This is something that the whole family should watch together.
